heroes

they're not made overnight

in the news

or like a virus catch

everyone unaware

they're the quiet ones

day in

day out

like little ants

in season

they move about

scampering for food

carrying bits and pieces

of crumbs

critters

leftovers

unnoticed

sometimes they go

through the furnace

burning

scathing fire

piercing

their souls

'til

shells

drop from their eyes

and they see

things

you and i

cannot fathom

from time to time

they

find themselves

as rare

commodities

onlookers

looking at them

like earthlings

from another planet

these unsung

heroes

are scattered

here and there

open your eyes

just a little

how beautiful

are
